It means nothing other than instead of digital data (your files or software programs, etc.) being held on your own personal computer‘s hard drive, or inside your company on an internal server in your building, it is being held by a 3rd party on their server(s) in an offsite location - you just get to it or access the software via the internet!
What do you need to consider when using a Cloud based service (aka Saas or Software-as-a-Service) that could hold your data?
- By what methods can you reach the company if you have a question or problem? (Phone, email, chat)
- How long have they been in business? Who are their customers? (Check Twitter for comments)
- Is there a way for you to backup your information yourself? If you decide to discontinue the service for any reason, can you get your information back in a usable format – and how long will this take?
- How often does the company backup their information? Where do they store it in case of a disaster?
- Do they have a User Community; a place where people post tips and tricks or FAQs
- Do they have Plug-Ins or Widgets to enhance their service? (See Yesterday’s Post)
- Can you import or export information? Can you upload information easily?
- Do they support all browser types? (Safari, Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.)
- Is there a way to hookup other services or systems you have that may have data? (* If you have someone who does your web work you will need to find out if they have APIs)
- Do they have multi-levels of support/functionality for a price? Note: Sometimes it is better to pay the $ for a higher level of support than to take the “free version”.
